Forward Deployed Engineer Roadmap: 16 Weeks, Week by Week
Zero to FDE is a 90-day roadmap that takes AIML graduates to Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) roles: twelve core weeks plus an optional four-week enterprise track, with one real deliverable every week.
Each week is a short list of concrete tasks and exactly one deliverable. The deliverable is the point: it proves you did the week, and it becomes your portfolio. Do not start Week 2 with an unfinished Week 1; a half-built thing teaches you less than a small finished one.
Month 1: Foundations, engineer before agent
- Week 1: Python and the engineering floor. Backend basics, not notebooks.
- Week 2: How LLMs actually work. The mechanics, not the marketing.
- Week 3: Retrieval, from first principles. RAG before you ever say the word RAG.
- Week 4: The agent loop, by hand. Understand what frameworks abstract away.
Month 2: Agentic systems, frameworks, tools, evaluation
- Week 5: LangGraph, properly. The current production standard for stateful agents.
- Week 6: MCP and the tool ecosystem. Now assumed, not optional.
- Week 7: Multi-agent systems and memory. Know when it earns its complexity.
- Week 8: Evaluation, the actual differentiator. Where most candidates stop, and where you do not.
Month 3: Production, deployment, and getting hired
- Week 9: Observability, cost, and guardrails. Proving to a security team the agent is safe.
- Week 10: Real deployment. Off localhost, onto the internet.
- Week 11: The portfolio and the niche. Go narrow, it is where the money actually is.
- Week 12: Interview readiness sprint. You are not studying anymore, you are rehearsing.
Month 4 (optional): The enterprise and consulting track
- Week 13: Data engineering, the bedrock a client audit needs. Untangle the mess before you build on it.
- Week 14: Cloud architecture at client scale. You are deploying into someone else's environment, not your own.
- Week 15: The consulting mindset. Solve the people problem so the technical solution can work.
- Week 16: Case interview practice. Enterprise FDE interviews test judgment, not just code.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the Forward Deployed Engineer roadmap take?
90 days for the 12 core weeks. The 4-week enterprise track is optional, for people targeting Palantir-scale FDE roles.
What experience do I need to start?
The plan assumes you can read and write basic Python from an AIML degree but have never shipped a real backend or touched an agent framework. If that is wrong in either direction, the sequence still holds; you will just move through some weeks faster.
