Forward Deployed Engineer jobs in 2026: what the data says

Three separate sources point the same way: demand for Forward Deployed Engineers grew several-fold in 2025 and kept growing in India in 2026. The same data also shows that most of these roles ask for a few years of experience, which changes how you should prepare.

How fast demand grew

  • Worldwide, January to September 2025: FDE job postings rose by more than 800%, according to Indeed data reported by eWeek.1
  • Worldwide, year on year: an analysis of 1,000 FDE postings by Bloomberry found postings up 1,165% for January to October 2025 compared with the same months of 2024, with October 2025 the highest month it recorded.2
  • India, the year to July 2026: CIEL HR reports FDE hiring grew 130% over the past year, with 52 organisations recruiting FDEs in July 2026. Bengaluru accounts for nearly half of the demand; Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR and Hyderabad together account for close to 80%.3

The two worldwide figures differ because they measure different samples and periods. They agree on the shape: a small, specialised role became a large hiring category in about a year.

What the job posts ask for

From Bloomberry’s 1,000 postings,2 the share that mention each skill:

SkillShare of postings
Python66%
TypeScript35%
AI agents35%
AWS32%
LLM experience31%
GCP22%
Azure18%
Kubernetes14%
RAG12%
Docker12%

The same analysis found 55% of postings describe working directly with customers, 37% building and deploying AI or ML systems, and 32% integrating systems and APIs. Almost half (47%) require customer-facing ability.2 This is the defining trait of the role: you build the software with the customer, inside their systems.

The number most courses leave out: experience

Experience asked forShare of postings
Entry level (0 to 2 years)12%
Mid level (3 to 5 years)60%
Senior (6 to 8 years)20%
Staff and above (9+ years)8%

Only about one posting in eight is open to someone with under two years of experience.2 Among 100 current FDEs whose career paths the analysis traced, 45% came from software engineering, 22% from solutions engineering, 15% from data roles, 10% from technical consulting and 8% from founding or early startup work.2

So if you are a fresh graduate, the honest reading is: the entry-level slice is real but small, and the people who win it bring proof. Shipped projects you can demo and explain matter more than certificates, and an applied AI or backend role is a common first step on the way.

Pay, as reported

These are market reports, not offers, and pay varies widely by company and city.

  • Worldwide: the median salary across Bloomberry’s postings that disclosed a range was $173,816, and 70% of postings mention equity. The analysis does not break pay down by country.2
  • India: CIEL HR reports ₹35–45 lakh a year for early-stage FDE roles, ₹70–90 lakh for experienced specialists, and ₹80 lakh to ₹1.4 crore for select AI infrastructure roles.3

The talent gap in India

CIEL HR estimates that about 1,200 professionals in India are fully equipped for the role today, rising to roughly 6,000 when adjacent talent is included.3 Demand is growing faster than that pool. That gap is the opportunity, for people who build the right skills now.

What this means if you are starting out

  1. Python first, written like backend code. It is in two thirds of postings.
  2. APIs and integration. A third of the work is connecting systems: HTTP, a FastAPI service, SQL.
  3. LLMs, agents and RAG. AI agents and LLM experience each appear in about a third of postings.
  4. Proof you can show. Two or three shipped projects, deployed and explained, are what get an entry-level application read.
  5. Communication. Nearly half the roles are customer-facing. Practise explaining your work to a non-engineer.

Zero to FDE is built around that list, in that order. Week 1 is free: Python as backend code, Git, the command line, HTTP with FastAPI, and SQL. The full roadmap shows every week after it.
