Forward Deployed Engineer vs ML engineer: which AI role fits you?
All three roles write code. The difference is who the code is for and where it runs. A software engineer builds the company’s product, an ML engineer builds and improves models, and a Forward Deployed Engineer makes AI work inside a specific customer’s business.
The roles side by side
| Software engineer | ML engineer | Forward Deployed Engineer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main output | Product features and services | Models, training and serving pipelines | Working AI systems inside a customer’s environment |
| Who they work with | Product team | Data scientists, platform team | The customer, directly, plus the product team |
| Typical stack | A language, APIs, databases, cloud | Python, ML frameworks, data pipelines, GPUs | Python, APIs, LLMs, RAG, agents, cloud, the customer’s systems |
| Success looks like | Feature shipped, reliable, maintainable | Better model metrics in production | The customer’s workflow runs on it, measurably better |
The FDE row is the unusual one: an analysis of 1,000 FDE job postings found 55% describe working directly with customers, and almost half (47%) require customer-facing ability.1
What FDE job posts ask for
From the same 1,000 postings:1 Python appears in 66%, AI agents in 35%, TypeScript in 35%, AWS in 32%, LLM experience in 31% and RAG in 12%. Building and deploying AI or ML systems is described in 37% of postings, and integrating systems and APIs in 32%. In other words, it is mostly software engineering, pointed at LLM systems and someone else’s data.
Where FDEs come from
| Previous role of 100 current FDEs | Share |
|---|---|
| Software engineering | 45% |
| Solutions engineering | 22% |
| Data roles | 15% |
| Technical consulting | 10% |
| Founding or early startup work | 8% |
Nearly half came from software engineering, and only 15% from data roles.1 (For the software engineering side in more detail, see FDE vs software engineer.) If you are a software engineer, you already have the larger half of the job. The gap is usually the AI layer (LLM APIs, retrieval, agents, evaluation) and practice explaining technical trade-offs to non-engineers.
Which one should you aim for?
- You like building product and going deep on one codebase: software engineering, with AI features.
- You like models, data and experiments: ML engineering.
- You like solving a real business problem end to end, and talking to the people who have it: FDE. Demand is growing fast, in India too: postings were about 19 times higher in June 2026 than a year earlier.2
Zero to FDE teaches the FDE path in order, starting with backend basics and ending with deployed, evaluated agents. Week 1 is free.
