Will AI replace software engineers? What the data says in 2026

Short answer: the data does not show AI replacing software engineers as a group. It does show three things a working engineer should take seriously: employers expect to cut tasks AI can automate, early-career roles are being hit first, and demand is moving towards engineers who can build with AI.

What employers say they will do

The World Economic Forum surveyed more than 1,000 employers for its Future of Jobs Report 2025.1 Four of its findings matter here:

Finding (2025 to 2030)Figure
Employers planning to reduce their workforce as AI automates certain tasks41%
Employers planning to upskill their workforce77%
Share of skills required on the job that is set to changenearly 40%
Jobs created vs displaced worldwide170 million vs 92 million (net +78 million)

The same report names AI and big data among the fastest-growing skills employers want.1 Read together: companies plan to automate tasks, and to keep and retrain the people who can work with the new tools.

Who is affected first

The most-cited evidence on actual jobs comes from Stanford’s Digital Economy Lab, using US payroll data. Its latest revision finds that employment of workers aged 22 to 25 in the most AI-exposed occupations is about 19% below where it would be had it kept pace with less-exposed peers, while experienced workers in those occupations show no comparable gap.2

That is US data, and India’s market is different. But the pattern is the useful part: AI is taking the routine, entry-level slice of work first. Experience, judgement and knowing how a business really runs are what it does not replace easily.

Where demand is growing

  • India, 2026: Forward Deployed Engineer job postings on Indeed in India rose about 19-fold year on year in June 2026, and stayed about 16 times higher in July and more than six times higher in August.3
  • India, the year to July 2026: CIEL HR reports FDE hiring grew 130%, with 52 organisations recruiting FDEs in July 2026.4
  • Worldwide: FDE postings rose more than 800% from January to September 2025, according to Indeed data reported by eWeek.5

A Forward Deployed Engineer is the engineer who makes AI work inside a company: connects it to messy data and internal systems, builds the API, retrieval and agent, tests it and ships it. Most of these roles ask for experience: 60% of 1,000 FDE postings analysed by Bloomberry wanted 3 to 5 years.6

What this means if you already work in tech

  1. Your experience is an asset, not a liability. The roles growing fastest want people who have shipped and supported real software.
  2. Add the AI layer, not a new career from zero. LLM APIs and tool calling, RAG that cites its sources, agents with guardrails, evaluation, deployment.
  3. Prove it with one production-like project. A service that answers questions over real documents, cites what it used, says “I don’t know” when nothing matches, and has a test set. Interviewers can see and probe it.
  4. Start before you need to. Learning while employed is cheaper and calmer than learning after a restructuring.

What this means if you are a graduate

The entry-level slice is where AI bites first, so a degree plus notebooks is a weak position. Projects that look like production work, deployed and explained, are what get an application read. See what FDE job posts ask for.
